Honouring the Autumn Equinox on and off our Yoga Mats

The Autumn Equinox (22nd September) is the day when we officially transition from Summer into Autumn. The daylight and the night's darkness are exactly 12 hours on this day. It signifies balance, transition and is a beautiful opportunity to "shed our leaves" (or that which we would like to leave behind) and connect with nature.

Early Morning Walks

Personally, the changing seasons are such a joy to watch. In the Autumn it is lovely to see the transition in colour and temperature. There are only a few short weeks left of early sunrises, so I am taking every opportunity to get outside.

Reflecting & Journalling

The bridge between Summer and Autumn is a great time to reflect. Think about how the summer has been for you: discuss it with a partner or loved one, or write it down:

What has been your overriding feeling or mood?

What are you grateful for?

What can you let go of as you move into a new season?

What would you like to feel in the Autumn?

Where can you find more balance?

Create an Altar

Set up a small altar in your home to honor the autumn equinox. Decorate it with symbols of the season - fallen leaves, seasonal fruits, candles, and crystals. Take a moment to express gratitude and connect with the balanced energy of this transitional time.

Eat Seasonally

One of the best things about this time of year is the abundance of harvest produce. I love to bake and cook delicious, wholesome food with seasonal ingredients. I will be using up the bruised apples to make a breakfast apple puree, baking some muffins with the last of the summer berries and looking forward to some roasted pumpkin when they are ready.

Balance Your Physical Energy

On the yoga mat, we can celebrate the Equinox through a balancing practice that reflects the firey and energised summer (Yang) and the grounding, introspective Autumn (Yin). I have created a free, balancing yoga flow which encorporates a warming and energising vinyasa practice, followed by some grounding and soothing deep stretches - yin yoga.
